After Tire Replacement, the Car Pulls — What’s the Real Reason

Many drivers are familiar with the situation when, after a seasonal tire change, the car starts to pull to one side. This is not only annoying but often a sign of a serious problem. At “Remzone,” we have been working in car repairs, including tire replacement, for over 5 years. Today, we’ll explain the most common reasons why a car starts to pull immediately after changing tires.

Why does the car start pulling?

Many drivers assume that if the car pulls immediately after a tire change, the cause is incorrect tire installation. Of course, this can be one of the reasons, but as our mechanics at the Warsaw car service station experience shows, the cause is often a combination of factors that not everyone is aware of.

Main reasons why the car pulls to one side

  1. Difference in tire pressure. This is especially relevant for front wheels. According to our experience, even a difference of 0.2–0.3 bar can change the car’s behavior on the road. Therefore, after tire installation, we always advise our clients to check and, if necessary, adjust the tire pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for their vehicle.
  2. Uneven tire wear, different stiffness. Even if all tires are the same size, they can handle the car differently. The stiffness of the carcass and rubber compound affects the car’s response when cornering and braking. This is especially noticeable if the driving axle has tires with worn shoulder zones on the tread.
  3. Mistakes when mounting wheels. If the tread pattern is incorrect or asymmetric tires are used, proper orientation during installation is required. Mistakes when moving tires from front to rear or left to right can cause unusual car behavior on the road.
  4. Different outer diameters and factory tolerances. Even if tires are the same size, small variations in height and diameter are always allowed, affecting the overall wheel diameter. If the difference increases for some reason, the car will pull to one side.

Other reasons

However, a car pulling is not always caused by tires. It is often due to a sticking brake caliper, play in the steering system, or worn suspension components.

Step-by-step guide from Remzone mechanics: what to do if your car pulls

First, check the tire pressure and set it according to factory specifications. Rotate the wheels “crosswise” and observe whether the car’s behavior changes. Test whether the car pulls on a flat road. If the problem persists, return to the tire service and check if the tires were installed correctly. If necessary, carry out an alignment and suspension diagnostic.

How to know if the situation has become dangerous

If your car pulls to one side while braking, at high speed, or when performing maneuvers, this is no longer just discomfort — it is a safety hazard. Postponing diagnostics in such cases is not advisable.

A real example from our experience

A Volkswagen Passat B8 owner came to us complaining that after switching from winter to summer tires, the car started pulling to the right, requiring constant steering adjustments. Before visiting our service, he had already checked the tire pressure and gone for an alignment check — the readings were within acceptable limits, so he suspected a suspension or steering rack problem.

We performed the following steps: we checked the tire pressure (the difference was only 0.1 bar) and swapped the wheels: the left tire was moved to the right, after which the car started pulling to the left. These actions showed that the problem was not in the suspension or alignment, but in the tires themselves. The real reason was that a new summer tire with increased carcass stiffness had been installed on the front wheel, and uneven internal deformation was also detected. This tire created higher rolling resistance, causing the car to pull constantly to one side. Our mechanics decided to swap the front tires with the rear ones, which reduced the pulling, and after replacing the defective tire under warranty, the problem was completely resolved.
