Signs of Automatic Gearbox Failure and When to Visit a Service Center

The automatic gearbox is one of the most important components of a car. However, during operation, it is subjected to increased stress, and how quickly it wears out depends on driving style, mileage, and weather conditions. A combination of unfavorable factors often leads to premature wear and various malfunctions. At our car service center in Warsaw, we often receive cars with serious transmission problems. Repairs can be costly. To help you save money and prevent breakdowns that are difficult and expensive to fix, we decided to explain the signs of automatic transmission failure, with a focus on which parts tend to fail most often.

Main Symptoms of Automatic Gearbox Problems

A noticeable vibration throughout the car is common. This can occur both when starting and while driving. Unusual sounds and knocks, such as clicking, buzzing, whining, as well as a sharp burning smell, may indicate a malfunction. Slipping gears or a complete stoppage of the car also point to transmission issues. If gears suddenly become hard to shift or the car shakes when changing gears, this is a serious problem indicating the need for adjustment or clutch replacement. A clear sign is the illumination of the “check” light on the dashboard. Even a beginner can tell that the automatic transmission is malfunctioning, but it is much harder to determine exactly what is broken and which parts need replacement.

Which Components Fail Most Often?

It is known that with active vehicle use, automatic transmission failures are not uncommon, since this system consists of dozens of parts and components. Based on our mechanics’ experience, here is a list of elements that most often require repair or replacement.

Transmission Fluid – a key component that ensures proper transmission function. It not only enables the operation of the torque converter but also transmits pressure, regulates temperature, and lubricates moving parts. Oil should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations – in some cars every 15–20,000 km, in others every 70–80,000 km. Failing to do so can lead to overheating, vibrations, and rapid wear of the transmission. It is important to check the oil level regularly, either manually with a dipstick or during service maintenance.

Hydraulic Block and Solenoids – frequently fail. This is the so-called “brain” of the automatic transmission, which regulates the circulation of transmission fluid and controls gear shifting. These components are sensitive to contamination, overheating, and low pressure.

Friction Discs – responsible for torque transfer. They wear out quickly due to friction, overheating, poor-quality oil, and aggressive driving, which significantly reduces their lifespan.

Torque Converter – acts as the clutch. Problems usually relate to wear of the lock-up clutch and support bearings. Aggressive driving and overheating can greatly reduce its lifespan.

Oil Pump – another automatic transmission component that often fails. It can break down due to oil starvation, metal debris in the oil, or natural mechanical wear.

ECU – Electronic Control Unit – responsible for the operation of all transmission electronics. It can fail due to overheating, moisture, voltage spikes, or serious accidents. Driving with a malfunctioning ECU is possible but very dangerous.

Tips from RemZone Mechanics
