Why Timely Oil Changes Save Money on Repairs

Most car owners know that an oil change is one of the most important procedures to ensure the proper functioning of their engine. However, not everyone understands its real importance and how it helps save money. Often it seems like you can wait a few more thousand kilometers since the engine is still running. In practice, this “savings” often ends in an expensive major repair. At our Warsaw car service center, RemZone, we frequently encounter the consequences of delayed oil changes. That’s why we know for sure that timely maintenance is better than repair.

Why is it important to change engine oil?

This technical fluid performs several functions in the engine simultaneously: it lubricates components, reduces friction between them, and protects against wear. Additionally, it helps cool the engine, remove excess heat from its parts, and clean internal surfaces from carbon deposits and dirt. Over time, however, its properties degrade: the oil thickens, dirt particles accumulate, along with wear products and carbon residues. Even the highest-quality engine oil “ages” over time. If it is not replaced in time, its effectiveness drops sharply, engine load increases, and malfunctions may occur.

How often should oil be changed?

The replacement interval largely depends on the car brand, engine type, driving conditions, and type of oil. Our mechanics recommend adding new oil at least once every ten thousand kilometers. However, this is a general guideline. For vehicles frequently used in cities, stuck in traffic, or operated in harsh climates, the intervals may be significantly shorter.

Using high-quality oil according to the manufacturer’s recommendations plays a crucial role in maintaining engine performance. For example, synthetic oil has better resistance to high temperatures and a longer service life compared to mineral oil.

What happens if oil is not changed?

If oil is not changed on time, the engine will start running “dry,” leading to overheating and cylinder scoring, valve clogging, and accelerated wear of piston rings and bearings. The pump and turbocharger may also fail.

Example from our service: a client came for an oil change after 30,000 kilometers. Result – a worn turbocharger and a major engine repair costing over 5,000 PLN. Had the procedure been done on time, it would have cost just over 189 PLN.

How does timely replacement help save money?

  1.     Prevents engine part failures since components wear out more slowly, avoiding costly repairs.
  2.     Reduces fuel consumption. Clean, “fresh” oil reduces friction, allowing the engine to run more efficiently and consume less fuel.
  3.     Extends engine life. The car retains power and stable performance much longer.

A simple calculation: changing oil every ten thousand kilometers costs 200 PLN, while a major engine repair if neglected costs 5,000–10,000 PLN. The savings are clear.

How to know when it’s time for an oil change?

It’s obvious when the oil has darkened and thickened, metallic noise appears during engine operation, oil level drops quickly, or the warning light on the dashboard comes on.

Tip from our service: check your oil every 1,000 kilometers, especially before long trips.

If you notice any of these signs, visit RemZone for an oil change. We use only certified products from well-known brands such as Shell, Motul, and Castrol, strictly following all manufacturer recommendations. Remember – it’s better to spend a few hundred PLN now on an oil change than several thousand later on an engine overhaul.
